When Is the Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

Due to Mount Kilimanjaro’s proximity to the equator, the region does not experience extreme winter or summer temperatures. Instead, the mountain has distinct dry and wet seasons. In general, the best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the warmer, drier months when weather conditions are more stable.

Safety is the primary concern. Poor weather significantly increases the risks associated with climbing. Rain, mud, snow, ice, and cold temperatures can make the trek far more strenuous and reduce visibility. In good weather, climbers are more comfortable—and summit success rates are higher.

Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the best conditions are typically found during periods with a lower chance of precipitation.

Dry Seasons (Best Climbing Conditions)

The dry seasons run from early December through early March and from early June through the end of October. These months offer the most reliable weather and are considered the best times to climb in terms of safety and comfort.

Because conditions are ideal, these periods are also the busiest on the mountain. Most of our climbs are scheduled during the dry seasons to give climbers the best possible experience.

January to Mid-March

These are the warmest months on Kilimanjaro. Mornings and evenings are often clear, while clouds and occasional brief showers may appear during the day.

Long Rainy Season (Late March to Mid-May)

The long rainy season typically runs from the end of March through mid-May. We do not recommend climbing during this time unless you are an experienced backpacker accustomed to wet and challenging conditions. Trails can be muddy, visibility may be low, and heavy rain is common. The advantage is fewer crowds.

June to October

From mid-June through the end of October, the mountain is generally cooler but drier. These months are very popular for climbing due to stable weather and excellent trail conditions.

Short Rainy Season (November to Early December)

The short rainy season usually occurs from early November to early December. Afternoon showers are common, but mornings and evenings are often clear and calm.

Please note that weather patterns on Kilimanjaro are unpredictable. Rainy seasons may start early or extend longer than expected, and it is possible to experience dry conditions during the rainy season—or rain during the dry season.
